How to Find Reputable Electricians and Plumbers

Date Added 27/08/2016

Finding a decent plumber or electrician shouldn`t be too difficult these days as there are plenty of reputable ones about, but if you don`t already know who they are then it can be a little more difficult to identify them. However, there are organisations and registries with which each of the tradesmen can join or register after being assessed for competency.

In this article, we will focus on the two trades that are required most frequently by the likes of landlords and developers. They are of course the electricians and plumbers who perform a variety of tasks to maintain the running of a property. They are crucial to property maintenance, but you must make sure you hire a reputable one. Here`s how.

How to Find a Good Electrician

As with any of these trades, your first port of call should be any friends or family who have used an electrician recently. If they have had a good experience then it`s probably worth getting the contact details and hiring them yourself. Word of mouth is important to many individual tradesmen so take advantage of it and reward them for their previous good work with some more work.

You can also contact the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) on 0870 013 0389 or visit the NICEIC website to check the credentials of an electrician and their business, as well as to search for a reputable electrician from your local area (if no recommendations are forthcoming). The NICEIC is the body that approves electricians, MCS installers, renewable energy installers and PAT testers, ensuring they are capable of carrying out their work to a high enough standard.

How to Find a Good Plumber

Similar to how to find a good electrician if nobody you know can recommend somebody, there is an organisation you can contact that registers plumbers after assessing their competency. That organisation is the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) who assesses individual plumbers and assigns accreditation under the Competent Persons Scheme and Water Regulations Approved Contractor Scheme. You can call them on 0121 711 5030 or you can visit the APHC website to search for local plumbers as well as view guides and advice regarding the plumbing and heating systems within your property.

How to Use the NICEIC and APHC Websites

On their websites, you can use your postcode to find a reputable electrician or plumber in your area or search a company`s name and address to check up on a recommended business to ensure they are registered. Do note that when using the ‘find a contractor` function, it`s imperative that you use the correct spelling of the business you are searching for. Also be aware that they may have multiple premises and that their registration is linked to their main office rather than the one nearest to you. If you do discover a business is not registered even though they claim they are, there is a ‘report` function which allows you to alert the organisation to the fraud.
